Case Study - FMC Spain
BACKGROUND OF CLIENT:
FMC Technologies Inc., is a global giant in the development and production of machinery and equipment. The products range from energy, to food production to airport equipment. With the sales of this equipment internationally, FMC is required by local and international regulations to provide operation, maintenance and safety manuals of all products to be in the native languages of their clients. CHALLENGES:
The client had some AutoCad drawings in English that needed to be translated into Spanish and Russian. They needed the translations to be delivered into AutoCad version 14. Due to the required timeline, it was necessary to utilize translators that could do the work directly in AutoCad. Finding qualified translators that own and work in this program is difficult. One of the Russian translators selected for this project was an expert in AutoCad, however, the version of AutoCad that he used would not allow for a down-save to version 14. The Spanish translator that was selected used AutoCad and did have the ability to save to version 14.
During the translation and DTP process, we were notified that the Spanish translator had a medical emergency and needed to send the files over the weekend in order to meet the deadline and take care of personal needs.
This meant that provisions had to be in place to receive and send the files over the weekend when the Project Manager was scheduled to be out of town.
SOLUTIONS:
Because the Russian translator’s AutoCad version would not allow a down-save, we sent the file to the client in a Word file for them to do the DTP in essence of time. For future translations into Russian using AutoCad, we’ve made arrangements to have the translator work in Word and have the DTP done in our office into AutoCad. With this solution, the client is able to schedule timing of projects and receive the documents in the desired format. The client was very happy with this solution and our ability to work with their unique needs.
Due to the emergency with the Spanish translator, our Project Manager made arrangements to stop at a remote location during her vacation to manage the transfer of the files through our Internet FTP portal and our proprietary on-line tracking and management system.
HIGHLIGHTS/BENEFITS:
It is clear that we can do whatever it takes to solve issues and make deadlines. We found out ways to ensure that projects are delivered in AutoCad format every time and we go out of our way to make deadlines, even when the office is closed.
